Teachers Request the Public to Join Them to Resist Low Salary

The General Secretary of the Uganda National Teachers Union, Teopista Birungi has turned to the public to join teachers to refuse a 15% salary increment proposed by the ministry of education.

Birungi who was addressing the press yesterday said that education is a human right thus the public should not feel that whatever government allocates to the sector is a favor.

She says that parents should not be blinded by the presence of privateschools because not everyone can afford them. “Public schools are your schools, therefore support us to get a good pay for your children to receive quality education”, said Birungi.

Birungi accused the government for forgetting their promise to the teachers of paying them not less than 500,000 for the least paid teacher.

She warned government that teachers are set to mobilize all citizens to join them to resist what she called inhuman pay.

This week the social services committee of parliament kicked out the ministry of education officials for presenting a budget framework paper with a 15%, translating to about 40,000 shillings increment on the teachers’ salary.
